Prince of Peace Catholic School is a 2014 Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, designated by the Federal Government as one of the top 15% of the schools in the country. Our standards and expectations are high and the support of the faculty and staff helps students to meet and even exceed these standards.
Our curriculum follows the Common Core Standards that are endorsed by the Archdiocese of Chicago.
The goal of this curriculum is to help every student reach their full potential through the use of a variety of teaching strategies and techniques. Challenging students to use critical thinking skills to solve problems, explain their answers and look for alternative ideas is part of our goal.
Religion is the heart of our school and mission. Every grade level uses text endorsed by the USCCB. Through weekly student-planned liturgies, we strive to help the students know and grow in their understanding of the Eucharist. Daily religion classes provide a strong foundation in Church teachings and Scripture.
Language Arts focus on the fundamentals of the English language. Developing strong writing skills enables students to communicate well in all subject areas. Grade-appropriate instruction builds for strong personal expression. Cursive writing is taught in the primary grades to develop not only a knowledge and use of the technique but also to help result in stronger brain development.
Mathematics: Our program strives to integrate knowledge with everyday experiences. Teachers use various grade-appropriate level techniques to provide students with strong foundational experiences in grades K-4. Accelerated students are further challenged in grades 5-8. All students use integrated technology as part of the curriculum. Tutoring by faculty also is available.
Reading: Students are involved in a sequential approach to phonics and language skills. Teachers use a combination of skills at each level and enable students to read and comprehend materials from a wide variety of sources of fiction and non-fiction.
Science: Engaging students in the new Science Standards involves more hands-on experiences and problem solving. Each grade works to build a solid framework of knowledge to be applied to current issues. Students in 7th and 8th grades compete in our annual Science Fair. We have winners who then compete at the state level.
Social Sciences: Students learn about their local communities and cultures, and throughout the years learn world geography and cultures as well as ancient and American history. Respect for past and present cultures enables students to be ready for our multi-cultural world and to be respectful of all.
